The Kimberley
&
How to get there

The KimberleyThe rugged Kimberley is located at the northern end of Western Australia. It is one of Australia's last frontiers. This magic and spiritual land is still a little-travelled and very remote area of magnificent scenery and great rivers. The Kimberley has climatic extremes - The Wet or Tropical summer:  heavy rains and searing heat from November till March.  Rivers and creeks can rise rapidly following rainfall and become impassable torrents within a short time.  The "build up" to the monsoon season (November) is the least comfortable time of the year; temperatures are generally at their highest and humidity is also high, without the benefit of a cooling rainfall.  Local folklore has it that November is the season for going "troppo" - strange behaviour triggered by climatic stress. The dry or winter season has pleasant temperatures and blue skies from April till October.  Days are warm and sunny and the nights are warm, too.  In winter there is hardly any rainfall, less than one day a month on average.

Fitzroy River

Fitzroy River after the floods
The Fitzroy is one of Australia's last great wild rivers. Its broad valleys, sandy beaches, waterholes, gorges and floodplains support a wealth of plant and animal life.

Udialla HomesteadUdialla Homestead is set in tropical gardens along the Fitzroy River just north of the Great Sandy Desert 200km from Broome and 110 km from Derby.
Udialla Station is the Base of Kimberley Camel Safaris and some safaris and bushwalks leave from here.
